During the early ’70s, Famagusta was said to be a celebrity hotspot, including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Bridget Bardot. Then in 1974, the southern part of Famagusta was invaded by the Turkish, as they took control, residents fled and it remains abandoned to this day, known as the Ghost Town!
Present-day Famagusta old town has an abundance of shops, cafes, and restaurants; one of the most famous cafés is Patek’s Patisserie which sits in an enviable location to enjoy delicious ice cream, Turkish coffee, and irresistible Turkish Delight.
Following along the coast you will reach Karpaz Peninsula known as the panhandle; here you can visit the historical Monastery of St. Barnabas the patron saint of Cyprus, take in the fabulous view across the coastline, and meet the famous wild Donkeys!
