Canada, with over 200,000km of coastline and 30 species of whales, boasts some of the best whale watching opportunities around the world.
Well-organised boat tours maximise your chances of spotting magnificent whales and incredible marine life and your experienced guide will know the most likely spots to find them! Whether you choose to travel in comfort on a cruise boat or an exhilarating Zodiac.
However, not every trip will be a success, in general, the whale watching season runs from May to October, but it depends on the species, as gray whales can be seen as early as March off the coast of Vancouver Island.
British Columbia is a whale-watching paradise and particularly Vancouver Island. Resident orcas live here year-round, while migratory species visit from March to October, with the season peaking around July and August.
Tofino is a small, remote destination on the west coast of Vancouver Island and offers the chance to see the grey whale migration in March as well as orcas, sea lions, eagles and coastal black bears. On a calm day, it is possible to watch whales pass by from the beaches and trails that extend along much of its coast.
In Eastern Canada, Nova Scotia and Quebec are famed for their humpbacks, fin whales, minke whales and even the mighty blue whale.
From East to West
Churchill in Manitoba, not only popular for viewing the Northern Lights and polar bears but also a fantastic place to spot elegant beluga whales. A visit during the summer months of July and August offers a chance to get up close to these friendly and curious whales.

Our top tips
- Capture the moment. Take a good camera with an appropriate lens. It may seem obvious, but if your camera is small it may be challenged to capture a good shot and you may miss precious moments!
- Take binoculars.
- If you are prone to seasickness, don't forget to take medication.
- Dress up warm even during the summer season as it can get cold during your sea excursion. When whale watching you'll likely be out on the open water for a few hours.
- The water magnifies harmful rays from the sun so don't forget to apply sunscreen.
- Polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and see whales further in the distance.
